Subject: Uncertainty — Early Signals
Following the Director’s note on uncertainty, the Office of Onboarding reviewed several early-stage experiences of working within new environments.
A consistent pattern emerged: uncertainty often appears after initial orientation has already taken place.
At this stage, individuals typically understand the landscape better than before, yet still encounter situations where outcomes remain difficult to predict.
Recent reflections included:
“I understand how things generally work, but I’m still unsure which approach is most effective.”
“I can see multiple paths forward. Choosing one still requires judgement.”
“Some decisions feel clearer in hindsight than in the moment.”
“I’m contributing, but still learning how influence moves through the system.”
These observations are consistent with the onboarding process.
Early familiarity does not immediately translate into certainty. Understanding how a system functions — formally and informally — takes time and repeated exposure.
From an onboarding perspective, uncertainty during this phase indicates continued learning rather than misalignment.
Recommendation from this office:
When uncertainty appears after initial orientation, treat it as a signal that deeper understanding is forming. Experience gradually converts uncertainty into judgement.
